Are you struggling with hormonal issues like irregular cycles, painful and heavy periods, skin troubles, or weight gain? Hormonal imbalances can affect so much of how we feel day-to-day, yet finding a natural way to bring things back into balance can be tricky. That’s where seed cycling comes in!
I was introduced to seed cycling when I was eight months postpartum with my youngest. While it’s common for cycles to fluctuate a bit during the postpartum period, I was ready to return to my normal rhythms. Within just three cycles of seed cycling, my cycle length fell back into the normal range (24–36 days), and I noticed a much healthier luteal phase — a promising sign of boosted progesterone levels! For me, seed cycling was a natural choice that really paid off.
To make life easier, I opted to use the pre-ground, organic seeds from The Seed Cycle, which are milled specifically to retain their maximum nutritional value. As a busy mom of two, buying pre-milled seeds was a no-brainer; I didn’t need another task on my to-do list!
What is Seed Cycling?
Seed cycling, or “The Seed Cycle,” is a simple and effective way to use food as medicine to support your hormones. By consuming specific seeds during different phases of your cycle, you’re giving your body access to essential nutrients that can support hormone production and regulation. The key players are flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds.
Each seed carries oils, vitamins, and minerals that help the body support hormone production and elimination. For example, they are rich in vitamins like zinc and selenium, which support hormone release, detoxification, and overall balance. Additionally, lignans—compounds found in flax and sesame seeds—act as phytoestrogens, meaning they can help balance estrogen levels.
How Does Seed Cycling Work?
The two phases of seed cycling align with the natural hormonal rhythms of your cycle:
Follicular Phase (Day 1 to Ovulation): This phase starts on the first day of your period and goes until ovulation. During this time, focus on flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds. The nutrients in these seeds, particularly lignans, help the body detoxify any excess estrogen, which is especially helpful during the estrogen-dominant follicular phase.
Luteal Phase (Ovulation to Period): From ovulation to the start of your next period, add sesame and sunflower seeds. These seeds support progesterone production, helping to lengthen the luteal phase if needed and ensuring you feel more balanced. Vitamin E and selenium in these seeds are excellent for detoxification and hormone support.
Step-by-Step Guide to Seed Cycling
The Seed Cycle Phase 1 Blend (Follicular Phase): From day 1 (first day of your period) until day 14 or you confirm ovulation add a scoop (around two tablespoons) of a flaxseed and pumpkin seed blend to your smoothies, yogurt bowls, porridge, salads, or soups.
The Seed Cycle Phase 2 Blend (Luteal Phase): From day 15 (or ovulation) the end of your cycle switch to a blend of sesame and sunflower seeds. Just like with Phase 1, mix it into your morning routine — smoothies, yogurt, or even salads.
If you have irregular or long cycles, it’s recommended to use the phases of the moon as a guide to cycle dates. Instead of starting Phase 1 seeds on the first day of your period, you can kick off your seed cycling with the first day of a new moon. Then, when the full moon arrives, switch over to Phase 2 seeds and keep that blend going until the next new moon
Why Use Pre-Milled Seeds?
While it’s possible to buy and grind seeds yourself, I chose to use The Seed Cycle’s pre-milled blend because it ensures that the seeds are milled and stored in a way that preserves nutrients. This method keeps the seeds fresh and nutrient-rich, so you get the full benefit of their natural hormone-balancing properties.
